Creative Writing
CREATIVE WRITING tours with the groups company appeal to those who like to combine their interest in developing and improving their writing skills with their interest in travel. Travel writing may be the aim, in which case a creative writing tour is an obvious holiday. But if another area of literary endevour is the aim, practice or tuition can still seem more pleasant in different surroundings.
You may choose to devote most of a short break to a series of tuition classes; or you may care to build an itinerary visiting several places on a longer journey around a literary theme with time to write fitted into the rest of the programme. Some groups simply want time away, with quiet and peaceful interludes to allow the words to come. Others prefer to take along a professional journalist or author who can offer masterclasses to help develop the writing skills amongst the group. A short break or a longer journey; with a travel-writing theme or a more general literary theme; with or without a professional along to offer help, tips and hints: the choice is there; the decision is for you and your group to make.
A Typical day...
A typical day on a groups company writing tour depends on the aim of the holiday. The day may start with a hearty breakfast, followed by a morning session run by a professional writer, during which style, content and themes may be discussed and perhaps work agreed upon by the group. After lunch part of the afternoon may be set aside for individual work by members of the group, before perhaps a late afternoon stroll presages an early evening session, discussing the work done today, is followed by Dinner.
If a travel theme runs through the holiday, the afternoon may see the group visiting an area of interest as a research trip to provide ideas for later writing.
Writing competitions may be worked into the day, with analysis and review taking place at one of the masterclasses. Or a short body of work may be produced during the days of the holiday for judging on the last day by your professional writer.
If your tour involves travelling from place to place during the tour, then stops may be made en route to make notes for later use in the preparation of short travel articles, for example.
How much time is set aside, and how much of the writing time is done as a class witha professional is of course a choice to be made by yourself and members of your group.
