The Republic of Madagascar - is the world's fourth largest island after Greenland, Niugini and Borneo, it is roughly the size of Kenya. Lying off the coast of East Africa it is an isolated land mass with the result that most of its mammals, half of its birdlife and most of its plant life is found only here. The 17 million Malagasy people, thought to be of Austonesian-African origin, gained independance from France in 1960. This is a poor country; some 70% of the people survive on less than a dollar a day, but for the visitor it is a country with a lot to offer. Although much of the interior is de-forested now, there are opportunities to observe wildlife in the several National Parks so the country is a natural choice for our WILDLIFE groups, whilst the distinctive flora and fauna also attract our PHOTOGRAPHIC, PAINTING and FILM groups. Madagascar is a good choice for RAMBLING and trekking programmes whilst the waters around Madagascar are ideal for island-hopping by Dhow; something of appeal to our GULET and CRUISING groups.
Travelling in Madagascar has its difficulties; the road network and the infrastructure in general demands understanding on the part of the visitor, but the rewards of journeying through Madagascar more than make up for this for the inveterate traveller.
