Slovenia

Situated in south central Europe. Slovenia lies at something of a cultural crossroads. On one side lies Italy, on another is Croatia, whilst a third neighbour, Austria, like the first two, has heavily influenced the history, cuisine and people of the country. With dramatic Alpine scenery and an inviting Adriatic coast this is a small but complex country which has had a chequered history before gaining independence in 1991. Its capital, Ljubljana with a population of around a quarter of a million, still has a small-town feel to it, whilst the country as a whole has a low population density.

For a country this size, the terrain is varied. The Julian Alps, dominated by Mount Triglav (9,346 feet) lie in the north, where we find the towns of Bled, Kranjska Gora, Bohinj and Borec and the Triglav National Park. To the south lie the Dinaric Alps, whilst the Karst scenery to the southwest offers a number of caves well worth visiting. Around half the country is covered by forest (in Europe only Finland and Sweden are more densely covered). This is a scenic country with much to offer the outdoor lover.

Our RAMBLING groups will find much to attract them along the seven thousand kilometres of trails, linking some one hundred and sixty five mountain lodges, whilst our CYCLING groups have a choice of several attractive routes. Tennis is a popular game here; an opportunity for our TENNIS groups to try a new destination. There are interesting wines here too, and, combined with the varied cultural influences on the cuisine, our FOOD AND WINE groups will find several areas of interest. With some eight courses on offer our GOLF groups may find this a different destination to what they are used to, but one worth trying.
