Located in the centre of Europe, Poland has been a bridge between the East and West and since joining the European Union in 2004 has taken off as a major short-haul destination, especially for cultural weekend breaks. Krakow and Warsaw are the two main destinations within Poland for visitors from the UK, both are steeped in history and have a good tourist infrastructure.
The capital, Warsaw was one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, before its destruction by the Nazis during the Second World War. Today the heart of 17th and 18th old city has been painstaking rebuilt.
Krakow is one of the best-preserved European medieval cities and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is a Kaleidoscope with a wealth of architectural gems from various periods, with magnificent churches and grand palaces. At the heart of the city lies one of the grandest squares in Europe, the Old Market Square. The city is overlooked by Wawel Hill, crowned by a walled city with a Royal Castle and Cathedral, the seat of Polish kings for seven centuries. The Christmas market held in city’s main square is a must.
