The Czech Republic - is one of the EU's newest additions. It has already lost most of the old communist feel that characterised the country during the soviet era. The country split, in an amicable divorce, from its erstwhile partner, Slovakia, in January 1993. We now have a modern, bustling, thoroughly westernised nation, abounding with history yet also very much of today.
Geographically the Republic divides into two main areas. Bohemia in the west, is mainly a basin drained by the Elbe and possessed of a few low mountains. Moravia in the east, is more hilly and dotted across its landscape are many small villages redolent of another era. This is a country packed with interest for the visitor
Prague, the capital, is one of the most beautiful capital cites of Europe, but other towns such as Karlovy Vary vie for attention. The architecture here appeals to our ARCHAEOLOGY, PAINTING and PHOTOGRAPHY groups, with itineraries that can take you all over the country - to Kuna Hora, Cheb, and Loket in Bohemia, for example, or Olomouc, Telc, or Kromenz in Moravia. There are castles and chateaux aplenty here, including those at Karlstejn and Konopiste; indeed the country boasts about a dozen UNESCO sites.
If you are looking for a more active holiday our RAMBLING groups might try walking in the Krkonose Mountains, Sumava, Jizerske hory or Jeseniky. Our CYCLING groups will find trails all over the Republic (try the trail from Prague to Vienna). There is also fishing. Our GOLF groups can take a short break or stay a week or two; there are courses spread across the country. If you want to combine culture with a little relaxation, or activity with a little taste of the nation, there is always the beer industry (with some 470 beers available) to investigate. With the Pilsner brewery in Plzen, of course, and some six breweries in Prague alone. There is also the wine in Moldavia. Indeed our FOOD AND WINE groups may find that, although not a destination they may have immediately thought of, Bohemia and Moravia might have much to offer them.
Whether you want culture, activity or just a taste of the food and wine, the Czech Republic is well worth exploring.
