Bulgaria - is a country still somewhat unfairly penalised by its image. To many this is a nation poorly served by a communist era and characterised by low standards and poor service and infrastructure, but much has changed. New to both the EU and to NATO, the country is emerging into the twenty-first century as a destination well worth visiting.
Geographically the shores of the Black Sea lie to the east, to the south lie Greece and Turkey whilst Romania, Serbia and Macedonia surround Bulgaria and each has influenced the country. Mountains cover over half the country, with the Alps, the Pirin and Rila Ranges, to the southwest, and further east the Rodope Mountains. The Danube Plain lies over much of the north of the country.
The history of this region is complex and there is much to interest our ARCHAEOLOGY groups. Sofia, the capital, is only part of the story; Plovdiv is worth a visit, along with Varna and Bourgas on the Black Sea coast. The spas at Bankya, near Sofia, along with those at Velingrad and Bourgaski Barni, for example, attract many visitors, whilst there are many resorts along the two hundred and thirty miles of Black Sea coast.
Our GOLF groups might even consider trying Bulgaria; although this is a sport in its infancy here there are plans to develop several courses in the next few years, including one at Dolna Banya due to open in 2008. At present there are three courses open for play - Elin Perin and Ihtiman both near Sofia and Sliven an hour or so from the Black Sea - enough to offer a short break or a week of GOLF.
Whether it's the towns and villages of the interior, the Black Sea coast or the chance to play a few courses somewhere different, Bulgaria will probably surprise you.
