Kazakhstan
This Central Asian nation is deceptively large; being about the size of the whole of western Europe and with a population of only some fifteen milllion, it is lightly populated. It is a land of flatlands, steppes, canyons and snow-capped mountains; a country offering remoteness and wide-open spaces.
It has few major cities; Astana is the capital, created out of nothing like Brasilia; Almaty is the major metropolis and then there is Chimkent. What Kazakhstan does have is minerals, of all kinds and in abundance.
It is a country, above all, of contrasts. Once famed for its position on the ancient Silk Road it is now possessed of a rapidly growing modern economy; once a part of the USSR it is carving an indepedent name for itself. It has ancient cities and also the Baikonur Space Complex.
As part of its move away from its traditional past the country now has its first golf course, just outside Almaty; a draw for our GOLF groups, and the basis of a golfing holiday with a difference.
With direct flights from London to Almaty the country is easy to reach, and best visited in the spring or the autumn; as winters are cold and summers mercilessly hot.
Not the obvious place for a holiday, many would say, but with a variety of people, a complex tradition, history and scenery on a big scale, there is a lot to see in Kazakhstan.
