Cambodia - is a country of stark contrasts. Geographically it is dominated by the Mekong River whilst to the north are rolling forests and off-shore pristine tranquil islands. The history of the country is one of marked highs and lows. The architectural highs - the glories of the Kmer kingdom, with its temples dating from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries stand in utter contrast to the more recent effects of the Kmer Rouge period through the genocide years of 1975 to 1979 when much of the culture of the country, as well as some two million of its people, were systematically destroyed.
One highlight that did survive of course is the complex of temples at Ankhor Wat. Once almost impossible to reach they are now easily accessible via the airport at Siem Reap. Siem Reap and the capital Phnom Penh are the two entry points for most travellers and both have much to offer.
The treasures of Ankhor Wat attract our ARCHAEOLOGICAL groups, whilst the Kmer ruins of the past contrast excitingly with the vibrant Kmer people of today, a fact not lost on our PHOTOGRAPHY and PAINTING groups. For a destination that is different, Cambodia offers an unusual CONFERENCE and INCENTIVE destination, whilst RAMBLING in the region of Ankhor Wat offers a different destination.
Cambodia has a complex tale to tell; its glories and its nightmares are juxtapositioned in the mind of the traveller as they reluctantly leave such a dramatic country.
