Mali
Music Photography Painting Rambling
The landlocked nation of Mali is Africa's seventh largest country, yet remains unknown to much of the outside world. This ex-French colony, independent since 1960, consists mostly of flat plains and savannah country through which flow two major rivers - the Senegal and the Niger. Although Malki is hardly a major world tourist destination there is in fact much to see here. The culture of the Dogon people, who live around the Bandiagara Escarpment, vies with the Great Mosque at Djenne and the Tomb of Askia as a highlight of any visit. But perhaps most famous of all, however, is the legendary city of Timbuctou, the goal of inveterate travellers since the days of the explorer Richard Burton. The country demands much of the traveller as the infrastructure is frequently unreliable. The presence here of no less than three World Heritage sites plus Timbuctou more than makes up for the inconveniences that can beset the traveller. Mali is a natural destination for our PHOTOGRAPHY tours, and for the more hardy painter, our PAINTING tours. The Bandiagara escarpment area will appeal to RAMBLING groups. Early in the year the music festival, Festival sur Le Fleuve, may appeal to our music groups.
