This landlocked southern African nation is one filled with stark drama and extremes. Politically it is the longest continually multi-party democratic country in the world; being stable ever since independence in 1966. Economically it is the world's largest producer of diamonds. However for the traveller it is the landscape and the flora and fauna that impresses so much.
Botswana is home to Africa's largest wilderness areas and the people and wildlife that populate them are the reason the country has been able to develop safari-based tourism as its other major industry. The vast Kalahari Desert, lying in the south west, makes up some 70% of the country, whilst the vast Okavango Delta covers much of the north east. The third region of note to the visitor is the Makgadikgadi Pans, in the north. Scattered across these landscapes are a sparse population of only some 1.7 million people.
Moremi Game Reserve; the Okavango Delta; and the Chobe Game Reserve are the three destinations that draw our groups. The landscape is of interest to our PHOTOGRAPHIC groups and PAINTING groups, whilst the two Game Reserves and the Delta draw our WILDLIFE groups. The vast empty spaces and the open roads that link them attract our MOTOR-CYCLE groups from South Africa.
Botswana, due to the limited infrastructure and lack of roads, is not an inexpensive place to visit; transport costs and accommodation costs are high. But the rewards for the traveller more than compensate.
